Frequently Asked Questions About Water Heater Repair

How long does a water heater last?

Traditional tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. Because they constantly hold water, their tanks are susceptible to rust and sediment.

Tankless water heaters last 15 to over 20 years. They have less risk of corrosion because they don’t store water.

Busy Bear Plumbing carries both types of water heaters, and we can help you decide which type and size best meet your needs and your budget. If your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan or requires frequent repairs, a Water Heater Replacement may be the most cost-effective long-term solution.

Why does my water heater take so long to heat the water?

There are several reasons that traditional tank water heaters take a while to heat water, including:

  • The distance from the water heater—The farther the water has to travel, the longer it takes for the warm water to reach you. Between the last time you used hot water and now, the water has had time to cool down. The cooler water arrives at its destination first, then the heated water. You have probably noticed that a kitchen or bathroom closest to the water heater gets warm water much sooner than a bathroom at the opposite end of the house.
  • Cold incoming water—water in winter is colder than in the summer because it travels through ground and weather-chilled pipes. Water heaters have a recovery time, which is the time it takes to heat a full tank of water. The colder the water entering the tank, the longer it takes to heat.
  • Other issues include sediment buildup inside the tank, which interferes with heat transfer between the water and heating elements, and the diameter of the water pipes. The larger the diameter of the pipe, the more water it holds and the longer it takes to heat.

If a tankless water heater stops delivering hot water, it could be due to:

  • Power supply issues.
  • Low water flow.
  • Blocked vents, clogged filter, or showerheads clogged by mineral deposits.
  • Mineral scaling in the heat exchanger, due to hard water.
  • Exceeding the heater’s maximum Gallons Per Minute (GPM).

Check the water heater’s digital display for an error code and take the appropriate action described in your owner’s manual.

We are happy to troubleshoot your water heater, both traditional and tankless, and make any necessary maintenance, repairs, or even a replacement if needed.

Why is my water heater making funny noises?

Noises from a water heater mean there’s a problem. It could be something as simple as a loose valve or low water pressure. Other issues include sediment buildup and the tank needs to be flushed, or a part is failing.

Tankless water heaters normally quietly hum or make a whirring sound while running. Other sounds, like banging, buzzing, or screeching, can be signs of trapped air, debris in the vents, or mineral scale buildup.

We are happy to troubleshoot your noisy water heater, perform normal maintenance tasks, or make repairs. If your water heater is leaking, creating safety concerns, or causing an urgent loss of hot water, contact our Emergency Plumber team for immediate assistance.

Why is my water heater leaking?

Water heater leaks can be caused by loose fittings, faulty valves, corrosion, excessive pressure, or tank failure. Some leaks can be repaired, while others may indicate that the water heater needs to be replaced. Busy Bear Plumbing can inspect the unit, identify the source of the leak, and recommend the best solution.
